News: England bowler Graham Onions ruled out of first Test

The Durham paceman suffered the problem in the nets after joining up with the squad ahead of the two-Test series, starting in Chittagong on Friday.

But fellow seamer Stuart Broad looks to be winning his fitness battle.

He bowled 10 overs during nets on Wednesday without feeling any discomfort to his back and will be re-assessed on the eve of the match.

Whether or not Broad is fit, Tim Bresnan looks sure to start while Middlesex newcomer Steven Finn, 20, has a decent chance of making a shock debut.

With front-line seamer Jimmy Anderson sitting out the tour and senior bowler Ryan Sidebottom having already flown home with a thigh injury, England's attack will have an unfamiliar look.

James Tredwell, who took eight wickets in the warm-up match against Bangladesh A, is likely to make his debut in a spin partnership with Graeme Swann.

Ajmal Shahzad and Liam Plunkett are also waiting in the wings, should England opt for five bowlers and at the same time decide against risking Broad.

Finn, who did not arrive in Bangladesh until the eve of the warm-up match, outshone Bresnan, Shahzad and Plunkett in claiming three wickets in 18 economical overs across two innings against the hosts.

The 6ft 7in paceman made his Middlesex debut aged 16 and claimed 53 wickets at an average of 30.64 in Division Two of the County Championship last season.

England coach Andy Flower also has decisions to make in the batting area, with Michael Carberry hoping to take the opener's slot alongside captain Alastair Cook.

Carberry's best bet is that England go with just four bowlers, otherwise Jonathan Trott is likely to face the new ball.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh were thrown into disarray when 22-year-old batsman Raqibul Hasan announced his international retirement on Wednesday.

Raqibul handed manager Shafiqul Haque a letter in the afternoon after a practice session before flying out of Chittagong, although the Bangladesh Cricket Board has not accepted his decision.

"We have got a letter from Raqibul saying he has retired from all forms of international cricket. He did not mention any reason," BCB spokesman Jalal Yunus said.

Raqibul was dropped from the one-day series but made his way back into the side for the Test series with an unbeaten century and a fifty in a three-day warm-up match against the tourists.
