News: Watson penalised for unruly celebration

Australian all-rounder Shane Watson on Saturday was slapped with a fine amounting to 15% of his match fees for his questionable reaction after he dismissed West Indies captain Chris Gayle on the fourth Day of the third Test at Perth.

Watson was charged by match referee Chris Broad under Article 2.1.8 which enumerates that players shall at all times conduct play within the spirit of the game. This incident took place in the 15th over of the West Indies second innings, when the 28-year-old, ran down the wicket screaming at Gayle when he was successful in getting the Windies captain out.

Watson was then pleaded guilty at an early stage by match referee Broad, who said: "Shane is a very energetic and enthusiastic bowler but on this occasion he has gone too far by running down the wicket screaming, thereby not showing due respect for the opponent. While handing down the punishment, I took into account that Shane admitted his mistake by pleading guilty.

This third and final Test of the series has experienced an unruly behaviour on account of the players for the second time. Caribbean bowler Suleimann Benn has already been suspended for two ODIs for his verbal and physical clash with Aussies Mitchell Johnson and Brad Hadinn, who were fined for the same incident.

After the Gayle incident, Australian team coach Tim Nielson warned Watson to watch out for his behaviour. "I spoke to him quickly at lunch-time and I said I think he needs to be careful about the way he reacts or celebrates his dismissals. I think that's probably been one of the things about this Test match also, there's been ... quite a bit of needle between the playing groups out there. That's something we're conscious of and something that I'm certainly talking to the playing group about,” Nielsen said.

"We're trying to maintain a pretty even keel as often as we can but at the same time, when things get emotional and it's hot and you're tired and there is a game on the line, you can understand that some of those reactions are maybe over the top sometimes. It's something that we've spoken about and I'll have another chat to Watto about it tonight," he added.
